How to Play in the Dirt and Start Your Own Garden

There are only a few times during the year that planting can be done. There are some plants that thrive more if you plant them a few months before their optimal blooming time. This is partly because of the time necessary for a seed to grow into a blooming a plant. It is also because the optimal time for planting seeds is when the ground is thawed. Some plants will benefit if planted a few seasons prior to the time they are due to bloom. Make sure you learn the best time to begin planting, if you have specific plants you want in your garden.

Loosen up your garden’s soil by digging into the ground before you start planting. Obviously if you dig when the conditions are not right you could end up harming your garden.

Don’t dig unless you have moist soil conditions. To judge the conditions of your soil form a ball with the soil you’ve dug up–if it sticks together in your hand conditions are good. If the ground is too moist the ball won’t break when you drop it. Spades and spading forks are the best tools for turning the dirt in your garden and increasing it’s oxygen flow.

Start simply. You might envision having a whole yard full of blooming plants. If you haven’t ever grown your own garden, you should start with just a plant or two. This way you don’t have to fret about putting forth a large effort for something that you might not like very much in the long run. You need time, commitment and patience if you want to be a gardener. Would you agree to marry someone that you hadn’t ever had a first date with? Why dedicate your whole yard to a vegetable garden if you haven’t ever even sprouted a lima bean before?

Starting your own garden can be really exciting! You probably are already daydreaming about the finished garden plot. Obviously a lot of work needs to be done before you get to that point. Doing some work before you plant and then keeping up with gardening trends and tips will help you ensure that the garden you get matches the garden you’ve been dreaming about.
